Cost of road delivery from Europe
The cost of road delivery of cargo from Europe to Ukraine is calculated for the specific route and cargo — there is no single “price per kilogram” here. The price is formed by several factors, and understanding them helps to choose a cost-effective scheme. Trans-Hope calculates road transport for legal entities and sole proprietors with delivery to Kyiv, Odesa, Kharkiv and Dnipro. It is part of the cargo delivery from Europe service, and the overall service is covered by road freight from Europe.
What the price depends on
The rate is made up of several components — the heavier and farther the cargo, the higher the price.
| Factor | How it affects the price |
|---|---|
| Country and distance | Closer (Poland, the Baltics) — cheaper; farther (Spain) — more expensive |
| Weight and volume | The greater of the two is charged (weight or volume/LDM) |
| LTL/FTL mode | Groupage — you pay for part of the truck; a full truck — entirely |
| Body type | A tilt is cheaper; a reefer and oversized — more expensive |
| Fuel | The price of diesel affects the base rate |
| Border delays | Queues and excess demurrage increase the price |
| Season and direction | A demand peak is dearer; a return load is cheaper |
Weight or volume — what is charged
Road transport is charged by the greater of two parameters: actual weight or volume. For light but bulky cargo, volume decides: in groupage it is often counted in linear metres (LDM) or cubic metres. That is why the exact weight, dimensions and number of pallets are needed for the calculation first of all.
LTL or FTL — how the mode affects the price
With groupage (LTL) you pay only for your part of the truck — that is cost-effective for small batches. With a full truck (FTL) the whole vehicle is paid for, but for a large volume the price per unit of cargo is lower. How the modes work is covered by groupage cargo (LTL) and a full truck (FTL).
Body type and cost
A tilt is the most common and the base-priced body. A reefer is more expensive because of maintaining the temperature regime — this is reefer road freight. Oversized and heavy cargo requires special transport and permits — this is oversized and heavy road freight, and such transport costs more.
Fuel, border delays and seasonality
The price of diesel is part of the base rate and moves with the market. Queues and excess demurrage at the border add costs, so the route and border crossing are chosen with the load in mind. A seasonal demand peak raises rates, while a return (back-haul) load is usually cheaper.
What else is included in the rate
Besides the transport itself, the final amount may include loading/unloading, cargo insurance and customs clearance at the border. Customs payments (duty and VAT) are counted separately from the carrier's rate; the clearance of road cargo is handled by customs clearance of road cargo.
