The war has brought enormous destruction to Ukraine. To rebuild the country we need not only the skilled hands of specialists, but construction companies equipped with modern specialised construction machinery. Excavators, mini-excavators, bulldozers, cranes, truck cranes, pile drivers, aerial work platforms and other machinery from the countries of Europe, and especially Germany, play a key role in this process.

This post will tell you how to find suitable specialised construction machinery from Europe, calculate the cost of delivery and customs clearance, and will give a step-by-step example of calculating the cost of delivering an excavator from Berlin to Kyiv.

Types of specialised construction machinery from Europe

Here is a list of construction machinery that is especially in demand in Ukraine:

  • Excavators – versatile machinery for earthworks and construction.

  • Mini-excavators – a compact solution for narrow spaces and delicate work.

  • Bulldozers – ideal for levelling ground and demolishing structures.

  • Pile drivers – for installing piles in the foundations of buildings and bridges.

  • Construction cranes – indispensable for assembling large structures.

  • Truck cranes – versatile machinery that can quickly arrive on site and get to work.

  • Aerial work platforms – suitable for working at height, for example, when repairing facades and power lines.

  • Front loaders – for loading / unloading cargo.

  • Rollers – needed for compacting soil and asphalt.

  • Concrete pumps – for delivering and pouring concrete at construction sites.

Purchasing and delivering construction machinery: what is important to know

The process of choosing, buying and delivering construction machinery can be tricky. To make the task easier, we recommend reading our post on buying a combine harvester from Germany. It describes in detail the stages of concluding the contract, transport and customs clearance.

In this post we will pay more attention to the cost of transport and customs clearance of specialised construction machinery from Europe.

Example of calculating the cost of delivering an excavator from Berlin to Kyiv

1. Road transport of the excavator
Transport on a low-loader from Berlin to Kyiv (approximately 1,300 km):

  • Cost: €2,500–3,000 (depending on the size of the machinery, the transport conditions and the time of year).

2. Customs duty and VAT
Construction machinery imported into Ukraine has preferential conditions:

  • Duty: 0% for construction machinery.

  • VAT: 20% of the value (purchase price + delivery).

For example, if the excavator costs €49,900 and transport is €3,000, the VAT will be:
(€49,900 + €3,000) × 20% = €10,580

3. Customs terminal in Kyiv

  • Cost of entry to the terminal: ₴1,500–2,000 (€25–50).

4. Customs broker services

  • Preparation of documents: ₴5,000–7,000 (€125–175).

5. Other costs

  • Cargo insurance (optional): 0.5% of the value of the excavator.

Total costs

For an excavator costing €49,900:

  • Transport: €3,000

  • VAT: €10,580

  • Customs terminal: €50

  • Broker services: €150

  • Insurance: €249

Total amount: ~€63,929
