Sea Container Transportation to Ukraine: Reliable and Economical

Container Shipping from China and Europe to Ukraine

A sea container is the most cost-effective way to deliver large consignments from China, Southeast Asia and Europe to Ukraine. Trans-Hope arranges FCL and LCL shipments from the ports of Shanghai, Ningbo, Guangzhou and Qingdao to Ukrainian ports — Odesa, Chornomorsk and Pivdennyi — including customs clearance and delivery to the client's warehouse in Kyiv, Odesa, Lviv, Kharkiv and Dnipro.

Estimated transit times: direct FCL to Chornomorsk — 30–35 days, via Constanta — 35–40 days, LCL — 45–50 days. FCL 20ft all-inclusive from Shanghai — from $2,000; LCL — from $150 per m³. Full details on routes, container types, pricing, demurrage and the process — below.

FCL and LCL: What Is the Difference and Which Is Better

FCL (Full Container Load) — you hire the entire container; cargo travels without transshipment. LCL (Less than Container Load) — consolidated shipment: you pay only for your share of the space; the rest is filled by other clients. The break-even point: up to 12–15 m³ LCL is more cost-effective; from 15–20 m³ FCL is generally the better choice.

Routes: Departure Ports in China and Transit Hubs

We work with all major Chinese ports: Shanghai, Ningbo, Guangzhou/Nansha/Shenzhen, Qingdao, Tianjin, Dalian, Xiamen, Yiwu. Shipping lines: MSC, Maersk, CMA CGM, Hapag-Lloyd, ZIM, COSCO, OOCL, ONE, PIL — we select the best option by transit time and rate.

The main transit hubs in Europe are Constanta (Romania) and Gdansk (Poland). Constanta has been the primary hub for Ukraine since 2022: port depth 19 m, cargo throughput on the Ukrainian route grew by 92% in 2024. Gdansk is the northern corridor, convenient for cargo destined for western Ukraine.

Destination Ports in Ukraine: Odesa, Chornomorsk, Pivdennyi

Trans-Hope delivers containers to three operational ports of Greater Odesa.

  • Chornomorsk — Ukraine's main container port, highest throughput, well-developed CFS and customs clearance infrastructure;
  • Odesa — OSTP and Quarantine Pier terminals; convenient for direct delivery to the city and surrounding region;
  • Pivdennyi (Southern) — specialises in bulk and liquid cargo, handles oversized and heavy shipments.

After unloading and customs clearance we deliver to the client's warehouse in any city in Ukraine.

Customs duty and VAT 20% are calculated from the customs value under the HS (UKT ZED) code — rates are confirmed before shipment. Main price factors: container type, route, shipping line, cargo class, season (the pre-Chinese New Year and Christmas peak raises rates by 30–80%) and Incoterms conditions.

Demurrage and Detention: Hidden Costs

Demurrage — a charge for the container standing in the port beyond the free time (usually 7–14 days), $25–80 per day for a 20ft. Detention — a charge for retaining the container after it has left the port beyond the allowed period, $25–70 per day. Both charges are applied automatically by the shipping line.

How to minimise: documents are prepared before the vessel arrives and the declaration is submitted in advance. We track the ETA and alert the client 5–7 days before the container arrives — so that clearance fits within the free time.

Documents for Customs Clearance of a Container

  • Bill of Lading (B/L) — the primary transport document;
  • Commercial invoice — exact value, quantity and description of the goods;
  • Packing list — itemised contents of each package;
  • Certificate of origin (Form A, EUR.1) — for preferential duty rates;
  • Veterinary / phytosanitary certificates — for food and plant-based goods;
  • Permits and conformity certificates — for pharmaceuticals, medical devices, chemicals, ADR cargo.

Document verification and declaration preparation are handled by our customs broker — we identify discrepancies before the vessel arrives, not at the moment of customs clearance.

How to Order Container Shipping from China to Ukraine

A step-by-step process from the first enquiry to receiving the cargo at your warehouse.

⏱ from 2 working days to arrange the shipment · 💰 free consultation and quote

  1. Describe the cargo
    Port or city of origin, goods, weight, volume, desired timeline.
  2. Choose the shipment type
    We will determine FCL or LCL and select the route and shipping line.
  3. Prepare documents
    Invoice, packing list, certificates — we will confirm the full list for your goods and HS code.
  4. Booking and dispatch
    We book space on the vessel; the container is loaded at the supplier or at the consolidation warehouse.
  5. Customs clearance
    The broker submits the declaration in advance; the container clears customs in Chornomorsk, Odesa or Pivdennyi.
  6. Delivery to warehouse
    After release — delivery to your warehouse in Kyiv, Odesa, Lviv, Kharkiv, Dnipro or any other city.

Common Mistakes When Organising Container Shipments

  • Understating the value in the invoice — customs will recalculate the value; fines and cargo delays are possible;
  • Unknown HS code before shipment — the duty rate becomes a surprise at the time of clearance;
  • No demurrage buffer built in — if documents are not ready when the vessel arrives, the clock starts on day one beyond free time;
  • Choosing LCL for volumes over 15 m³ — overpayment; at that volume FCL is usually cheaper;
  • No cargo insurance — if goods are damaged or lost without a policy, compensation is virtually impossible;
  • Ignoring seasonal rate peaks — for the Chinese New Year and the e-commerce peak you need to book 6–8 weeks ahead.

Why Clients Choose Trans-Hope for Container Shipping

Since 2009 — over 3,700 deliveries for 139 clients. We manage cargo from the factory in China to the warehouse in Ukraine as a single point of contact: freight, consolidation, customs in Chornomorsk, Odesa or Pivdennyi, and delivery across the country.

  • All major shipping lines — MSC, Maersk, CMA CGM, Hapag-Lloyd, ZIM, COSCO: we select the best option by transit time and price;
  • In-house customs broker — the declaration is prepared before the vessel arrives; clearance does not hold the container at the CFS;
  • Demurrage control — we track the ETA and alert clients 5–7 days in advance so they can clear the goods within free time;
  • Fixed rate — the price does not change after confirmation;
  • Insurance and delivery across Ukraine — arranged on request; we deliver to any city.
