FCL and LCL: What Is the Difference and Which Is Better

FCL (Full Container Load) — you hire the entire container; cargo travels without transshipment. LCL (Less than Container Load) — consolidated shipment: you pay only for your share of the space; the rest is filled by other clients. The break-even point: up to 12–15 m³ LCL is more cost-effective; from 15–20 m³ FCL is generally the better choice.

What Makes Up the Cost of Container Shipping

Customs duty and VAT 20% are calculated from the customs value under the HS (UKT ZED) code — rates are confirmed before shipment. Main price factors: container type, route, shipping line, cargo class, season (the pre-Chinese New Year and Christmas peak raises rates by 30–80%) and Incoterms conditions.

Demurrage and Detention: Hidden Costs

Demurrage — a charge for the container standing in the port beyond the free time (usually 7–14 days), $25–80 per day for a 20ft. Detention — a charge for retaining the container after it has left the port beyond the allowed period, $25–70 per day. Both charges are applied automatically by the shipping line.

How to minimise: documents are prepared before the vessel arrives and the declaration is submitted in advance. We track the ETA and alert the client 5–7 days before the container arrives — so that clearance fits within the free time.

• Bill of Lading (B/L) — the primary transport document;
• Commercial invoice — exact value, quantity and description of the goods;
• Packing list — itemised contents of each package;
• Certificate of origin (Form A, EUR.1) — for preferential duty rates;
• Veterinary / phytosanitary certificates — for food and plant-based goods;
• Permits and conformity certificates — for pharmaceuticals, medical devices, chemicals, ADR cargo.

Common Mistakes When Organising Container Shipments

• Understating the value in the invoice — customs will recalculate the value; fines and cargo delays are possible;
• Unknown HS code before shipment — the duty rate becomes a surprise at the time of clearance;
• No demurrage buffer built in — if documents are not ready when the vessel arrives, the clock starts on day one beyond free time;
• Choosing LCL for volumes over 15 m³ — overpayment; at that volume FCL is usually cheaper;
• No cargo insurance — if goods are damaged or lost without a policy, compensation is virtually impossible;
• Ignoring seasonal rate peaks — for the Chinese New Year and the e-commerce peak you need to book 6–8 weeks ahead.
