Choosing a mode of transport
The choice of transport determines the timing, price and safety of the cargo. There is no “best” mode — there is an optimal one for a specific task. Let us compare sea, road, rail and air by key criteria.
By what criteria to compare
The main criteria are speed, cost per unit, maximum volume and weight, route flexibility, reliability of timing and suitability for the type of cargo. Priorities change for different tasks.
Comparison table
| Mode | Speed | Cost |
|---|---|---|
| Sea | Slow | Low |
| Rail | Medium | Medium |
| Road | Medium | Medium |
| Air | Fast | High |
Sea transport
Sea is the cheapest way for large volumes and long routes, especially from Asia. The downside is long timing and dependence on ports and schedules. Containers from China are handled by sea delivery.
Road transport
Road is the most flexible mode: door-to-door delivery without transshipments. It is optimal for Europe and medium consignments. Goods can be carried by a full truck or as groupage. Delivery from Europe is handled by road transport.
Rail transport
Rail is a compromise between price and timing for large consignments, including from China. It is less dependent on weather than sea. The complication is the different gauge, but this is solved by transshipment or a single waybill.
Air transport
Air is the fastest but also the most expensive mode. It is justified for valuable, perishable or urgent cargo. The cost is calculated by chargeable weight. Air delivery is handled by air freight.
Multimodal solutions
It is often optimal to combine: for example sea to the port and road to the warehouse. A multimodal route goes under one contract with a single responsible party. More details — transport logistics.
Example: China — Ukraine
For a route from China, sea gives a low price with long timing, rail is faster than sea at a moderate price, and air is for urgent and valuable consignments. The choice depends on the budget and urgency.
How to choose for the task
First the priority is determined: price or timing. Then the volume, route and type of cargo (temperature, dangerous, oversized) are taken into account. The final decision is better made after calculating the total cost to the warehouse.
