Transport logistics and freight forwarding
Behind the word “delivery” there is a whole chain: choice of transport, route, documents, customs, warehouse and the last mile. Transport logistics links these into one process. Let us break down its basics.
What transport logistics is
Transport logistics is organizing the movement of cargo from the sender to the recipient with optimal timing, cost and risks. It answers the questions: by which transport to ship, along which route and with which documents.
The forwarder’s role
A freight forwarder is the organizer of the transport who selects the mode, books space, arranges documents and coordinates all stages. For an importer it is a single window instead of a dozen contractors. We run multimodal routes as multimodal transport under one contract.
Modes of transport
| Mode | When advantageous |
|---|---|
| Sea | Large volumes, long routes |
| Road | Flexibility, door delivery |
| Rail | Stability, large consignments |
| Air | Speed, valuable cargo |
| Multimodal | Combination for the route |
Stages of the logistics chain
A typical chain: pickup at the sender, main transport, transshipment when changing modes, customs and delivery to the warehouse. At each stage timing and documents matter so the cargo does not idle.
Transport documents
Each mode of transport has its own document: CMR for road, a bill of lading for sea, an air waybill for air, CIM/SMGS for rail. They confirm the transport contract and are needed for customs. For containers the key document is the bill of lading.
Cargo insurance
Insurance covers the risks of damage or loss of cargo in transit. For expensive or long shipments it is a mandatory element. The level of cover depends on the delivery basis and the route.
Warehouse and the last mile
After customs the cargo can be stored in a warehouse and shipped out in parts — this is flexibility for trade. The last mile — delivery to the final recipient — is often the most expensive section of the chain.
Factors in choosing logistics
The choice is affected by the volume and weight of the cargo, urgency, budget, route and type of goods (temperature, dangerous, oversized). There is no “best” transport — there is an optimal one for a specific task. Road delivery from Europe is handled by road transport, and containers from Asia by sea delivery.
