Customs limits for citizens
On entry to Ukraine, citizens may import goods for personal use within duty-free limits. The limit depends on the mode of transport and the frequency of crossing the border. Let us break down the main rules.
Green and red corridor
Two corridors operate at customs. Green — if there are no goods subject to declaration and the limits are not exceeded. Red — if there are goods to declare, the norms are exceeded or there is cash above the limit. The choice of corridor is a form of declaration.
Duty-free limits
By air you can import goods worth up to 1000 euros without payments. By other modes of transport (road, rail, sea) — up to 500 euros and with a weight of up to 50 kg. These limits concern goods, not personal belongings in use.
Summary table of limits
| Situation | Value limit | Weight |
|---|---|---|
| Air transport | up to €1000 | no limit |
| Road/rail/sea | up to €500 | up to 50 kg |
| More than once/72 h | up to €50 | up to 50 kg |
Frequent border crossings
If a person enters more than once in 72 hours, the duty-free limit is reduced to 50 euros. This rule restricts the frequent import of goods disguised as personal ones.
What if the limit is exceeded
Import duty and VAT are charged on the amount above the duty-free limit. The goods must be declared through the red corridor and their value confirmed.
Alcohol and tobacco norms
For persons aged 18 and over, duty-free norms apply: a limited quantity of strong alcohol, wine, beer, and also cigarettes or tobacco. Above the norms — with payment of charges and only through the red corridor. It is better to check the exact volumes before the trip.
Cash declaration
Cash in an amount equivalent to 10,000 euros or more is subject to mandatory written declaration on entry and exit. Amounts below the threshold are declared voluntarily.
Restrictions and prohibitions
The import of weapons, medicines, animals, cultural valuables and products of animal origin is regulated separately. Such goods may require permits regardless of value.
Commercial consignments — separately
Limits for citizens concern goods for personal use. If goods are imported for sale or business, this is a commercial consignment with full customs clearance. See import customs payments.
